Republic of Latvia joined NATO end European Union in 2004. The Latvian military has participated in NATO and EU missions abroad and regularly conducts training and exercises. Latvia hosts NATO partner forces. North Atlantic Alliance has provided air protection for Latvia since 2004 through its Baltics Air Policing mission. Latvia is a member of the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force, a pool of high-readiness military forces from 10 Baltic and Scandinavian countries. Belarus has close security ties with Russia. In 2022, Belarus allowed Russian military forces to stage on its territory during its invasion of Ukraine. Russia is the principal supplier of arms to Belarus, and Belarusian troops reportedly train on Russian equipment. The inventory of the Belarus Armed Forces is comprised mostly of Russian andSoviet-origin equipment, and since 2010 Russia is the leading provider of arms. Belarus's defense industry manufactures some equipment (mostly modernized Soviet designs).
