Military power of Latvia & Georgia

Latvia is a country located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Estonia and Lithuania, with an area of 64,589 km² (land boundries: 1,370 km and costline 498 km). The capital of Latvia is Riga. The number of inhabitants is 1,842,226.

Republic of Latvia joined NATO end European Union in 2004. The Latvian military has participated in NATO and EU missions abroad and regularly conducts training and exercises. Latvia hosts NATO partner forces. North Atlantic Alliance has provided air protection for Latvia since 2004 through its Baltics Air Policing mission. Latvia is a member of the UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force, a pool of high-readiness military forces from 10 Baltic and Scandinavian countries. Georgia is a country located in Southwestern Asia, bordering the Black Sea, between Turkey and Russia, with an area of 69,700 km² (land boundries: 141 km and costline 7,314 km). The capital of Georgia is Tbilisi. The number of inhabitants is 3,694,608.

Georgia is not a member of NATO but has had a relationship with the Alliance since 1992 and declared its aspiration to join in 2002. Georgia has participated in multinational exercises and security operations abroad with NATO. The Defense Forces of Georgia (DFG) is focused primarily on Russia, which maintains military bases and troops in occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In 2008, a five-day conflict with Russian forces ended in defeat and the expulsion of Georgian forces from the breakaway regions. The majority of the military's inventory consists of Soviet-era weapons and equipment, some of which has been upgraded. It has smaller quantities of mostly secondhand material from such countries as Israel, Turkey, and the Uinted States, as well as some domestically produced equipment.
